There are thousands of books in the market, and various books are recommended by different teachers. Some of these books are truly excellent, while others gain fame through marketing and advertising strategies. When it comes to language learning, there are different categories of books. Some follow traditional teaching methods, such as the Grammar Translation Method (GTM), which includes Urdu to English and English to Urdu translation techniques. These books are often recommended for traditional Pakistani exams like Matric, Intermediate, or Graduation.
Additionally, some books are specifically designed for the preparation of PMS/CSS exams. However, I believe learners should choose books that teach English as a skill, especially if the goal is to use the language in real life. Below, I have listed books recommended for international learners at the college, school, and university levels.
These books are based on the three levels of Streamline, featuring dialogues used in daily life, such as conversations between a shopkeeper and a customer. The most interesting aspect of these books is that they provide grammatical structures and ways to practice them. For example, the structure “it is hard for me” can be used to construct thousands of sentences:
If you are preparing for IELTS or job interviews, this series is highly recommended.
Many learners think that grammar only involves tenses, active/passive voice, and parts of speech. Some include direct and indirect speech. However, learning the definitions of each part is not sufficient for comprehensive grammar knowledge. Developing an understanding of phrases, prepositional phrases, and overall structures of ideas is crucial.
I highly recommend the book by Burton Roberts, which focuses on the syntax of English. PMS and CSS aspirants must read this book. Another book I teach is “Oxford Practice Grammar” by John Eastwood. This book includes practical exercises at each level. A similar book, “Essential Grammar in Use” by Raymond Murphy, is recommended for beginners.
For children, I recommend starting with small structures from websites or storybooks rather than grammar-focused books. Story reading is beneficial for young learners. You may also go through my 40 Day Kids Course.
These books are designed especially for ESL learners (those who learn English as a second language).
Raymond Murphy has also authored other series such as “Vocabulary in Use” and “Phrasal Verbs in Use,” which are highly recommended.
