Modal Verb + Be + [NP, PP, Adjective, ING FORM, 3rd FORM]

When modal verbs come alone, you are supposed to use 1st form of verb but when you find ‘BE’ after any modal verb, you will keep five types of structures in mind. For example, using a noun phrase, prepositional phrase, adjective, verb’s -ing form and 3rd form of verb.

May be

I may be [a businessman].

I may be [in a garden].

I may be [busy].

I may be [writing] something.

The letter may be [written].

Might be

I might be [a teacher].

I might be [at a restaurant]. 

I might be [sad].

I might be [sitting] there. 

I might be [toldْ] by her. – Passive Voice

Can be

I can be [a doctor].

I can be [with my family].

I can be [happy].

I can be [helping] him.

I can be [invited] by him. – Passive Structure

Could be

I could be [a pilot]. I could be a cricketer. I could be a police officer. 

I could be [in the school]. I could be with my family. I could be at the store. 

I could be helping you. I could be reading a book. I could be cleaning the room. I could be writing something for you. I could be cutting the vegetables. I could be riding a horse. I could be playing cricket with my friend. 

 

The mobile could be used by me. [Passive Voice] 

 

WhatsApp could be deleted. The game could be installed. The meeting could be ended by the host. The book could be read. The book could be written. The application could be sold. The chair could be broken. The chair could be bought. The mobile could be recharged. The meal could be served. The problem could be solved. The motor could be stopped. The number could be blocked. The car could be washed. The trees could be grown. 

Will/Would/Shall

Noun Phrase

He will be a painter. 

He would be a doctor. 

I would be a commissioner. 

I will be a police officer.
I will be a teacher. 

I shall be a cricketer. 

I would be a footballer. 

I shall be a great teacher. 

I would be a pilot. 

I will be an editor. 

PP – Prepositional Phrase

I will be [in the park].

I would be [with my family].

I shall be [at the restaurant]. 

Adjective 

I will be fine. 

I shall be great. 

I would be busy. 

ING FORM

I will be writing something. 

I shall be inviting you.

I would be reading a book. 

3rd Form

The book shall be read. 

The book will be published. 

The book would be given. 

The room will be cleaned. 

The letter would be written. 

I shall be invited.

Should be/Must be

I should be a teacher. 

You should be a doctor. 

You must be a good doctor. 

You must be a player. 

You should be a great scientist. 

You should be a nice teacher. 

You must be a good student. 

You should be an honest person. 

You must be a footballer. 

 

PP – Prepositional Phrase

 

You should be [in the park].

You must be [at home].

 

You should be with your brother. 

You must be with your brother. 

You should be on your duty. 

You must be in the jungle. 

 

Adjective

You should be nice. 

You must be happy. 

 

ING FORM

 3rd form
